Canada and the United States are blessed with the world's largest freshwater ecosystem - the Great Lakes. Yet, with these majestic waters at the tips of our toes, we also have an enormous responsibility for being good stewards. Our rapid industrialization and high quality of life have made this region the third largest economy in the world. But, it has also put enormous strain on the system. It is up to us, across both borders, to ensure a sustainable future for all who depend on the Great Lakes. The future can be healthy, prosperous and productive.

A vital tool for ensuring a healthy Great Lakes ecosystem and a positive future for the people, plants and animals that depend on these waters, is the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. That is why I am urging you to work together to revitalize and revise this important Agreement this year. As part of this process it is critical that citizens be able to meaningfully participate in the decision-making process.

The fate of the Great Lakes depends on participation at all levels. This includes both government and the public. But most of all, it is your leadership that will set the tone for the future of the Great Lakes. Take a giant step forward and commit to revitalizing and revising the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement.
